Rebuilding Together Tulsa honored at fourth annual ONE Awards
(Tulsa, OK) Rebuilding Together Tulsa was named a category winner for the Devon Energy Corporation: Community Award at the fourth annual Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards in Tulsa. Nine agencies were named winners of their unique category of service, and 18 received finalist awards.
The ONE Awards, hosted annually by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, is a celebratory event that honors nonprofits throughout the state for serving and inspiring their communities.
Travis Campbell, event chair of the 2011 ONE Awards, praised the work of this year’s finalists.
“The 27 finalists being highlighted this evening are continually helping educate, enrich and encourage people every day,” said Campbell. “Their commitment to excellence has set them apart.”
Rebuilding Together Tulsa’s mission is to bring volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners. Over 500 volunteers work throughout the year to make home repairs for homeowners living on limited incomes to make their homes safer, more secure and weatherproof while improving Tulsa neighborhoods. Rebuilding Together Tulsa offers four programs: Roofs, Energy Efficiency, Safe at Home and R.O.O.T. All repairs are made free of charge and have a proven impact on the homeowners quality of life.
Jennifer Barcus-Schafer, CEO, accepted the Devon Energy Corporation: Community Award on behalf of Rebuilding Together Tulsa at the event. Rebuilding Together Tulsa was also awarded a $7,500 monetary gift. After receiving the award, Barcus-Schafer said, "To be recognized for the work our volunteers, donors, staff and other supporters do every day to make home repairs for low-income homeowners is such an honor! This recognition will only help us reach more deserving homeowners in need and help them live in a safe, secure and weatherproof home."
Finalists for the ONE Awards are nominated and selected by the ONE Awards Selection Commission, chaired by J. Jerry Dickman of Tulsa. The commission, made up of community leaders from throughout the state, meets annually to identify and reward nonprofits that exhibit excellence in their daily operations.
The commissioners include Michael A. Cawley (Ardmore), Nance Diamond (Shawnee), Frederick Drummond (Pawhuska), Ken Fergeson (Altus), R.H. Harbaugh (Tulsa), Kim Henry (Oklahoma City), Phil Lakin, Jr. (Tulsa), Frank Merrick (Oklahoma City), Polly Nichols (Oklahoma City), the Rev. George Young (Oklahoma City) and Stanton L. Young (Oklahoma City).
“Our commission nominated each finalist based on their overall impact and organizational accountability,” said Campbell. “We are all very proud of the work of each nonprofit here tonight.”
Of the 19,000 nonprofits in Oklahoma, 70 nonprofits were originally nominated for a ONE Award and only 27 were selected as finalists. Nine ultimately won in their service category.
